Troubleshooting Current Transformer (CT) Scaling, Unstable Readings, and Common Configuration Issues
If your panel meter is displaying incorrect amperage, unstable values, or unexpected zero offsets, the issue is often related to the current transformer (CT) or its configuration, and not the meter itself.
Symptoms
You may experience one or more of the following:
- Meter displays incorrect amperage
- Current values fluctuate or jump unexpectedly
- Reading never returns to zero
- Measured value is much higher or lower than expected
- Current measurements are inaccurate at low loads
- Meter behaves differently when connected to a VFD
Step1: Verify Your Current Transformer Ratio
The CT ratio must match the value configured in the meter.

Step 2: Confirm Primary vs. Secondary Scaling
One of the most common setup mistakes is confusing the CT's primary and secondary values.
The primary is the maximum current flowing through the conductor.
The secondary is the output current delivered by the CT (typically 5 A or 1 A.)
Example:
A 400:5 CT means:
- Primary = 400 A
- Secondary = 5 A
Step 3: Check CT Wiring
Incorrect CT wiring can produce unstable or inaccurate readings.
Verify:
- CT polarity (P1/P2 or K/L markings)
- Secure terminal connections
- Correct orientation around the conductor
- Proper termination of secondary wiring
Step 4: Are You Measuring a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD)?
Current measurements on VFD-driven motors can differ from measurements on standard AC loads.
VFD outputs contain high-frequency switching components that may affect current transformer performance.
Most VFD’s have separate outputs of 0-10VDC or 4-20mA. You could use our APM-PROC meter if this is the case.
Depending on the application, additional filtering or a different measurement method may be required.
Step 5: Avoid Parallel CT Connections
Connecting multiple CTs in parallel can create inaccurate or unstable measurements.
Whenever possible:
- Use one CT per measurement channel
- Follow the meter's wiring recommendations
- Do not parallel CT secondaries unless specifically supported
Step 6: Low Current Readings
Very small currents can appear unstable due to:
- Electrical noise
- CT accuracy limits
- Resolution of the meter
- Small zero offsets
Some fluctuation near zero is normal and does not necessarily indicate a faulty meter.
Why Doesn't My Meter Return Exactly to Zero?
Small offsets around zero can occur because of:
- Electrical noise
- CT characteristics
- ADC resolution
- Environmental interference
If the offset remains within the specified accuracy of the meter, this is considered normal operation.
